Mexican Plum
Prunus mexicana
A beautiful native deciduous tree known for its fragrant white flowers that appear in early spring, often before the leaves emerge. The blooms provide valuable nectar for bees and other early-season pollinators, followed by small purple-red plums that are enjoyed by birds and wildlife. Its textured bark, rounded canopy, and manageable size make it an excellent choice for native landscapes, pollinator gardens, and small yards.
Care: Plant in full sun to part shade in well-draining soil. Water regularly during the first growing season, then provide occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Mexican plum is heat tolerant and moderately drought tolerant once established. Prune in late winter as needed to remove damaged branches or shape the canopy.
Mature Size: Approximately 15–25 feet tall and 15–20 feet wide.
