Desert Mallow
Sphaeralcea ambigua
A colorful, drought-tolerant perennial shrub featuring soft, silvery-gray foliage and clusters of bright orange, cup-shaped flowers. Blooms are most abundant from spring through summer and attract bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. Desert mallow is an excellent choice for xeriscapes, rock gardens, dry borders, and sunny landscapes where heat and limited water are concerns.
Care: Plant in full sun and sandy, rocky, or otherwise well-draining soil. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce watering significantly. Desert mallow is highly heat and drought tolerant once established and performs best when the soil is allowed to dry between waterings. Avoid heavy, consistently wet soil. Lightly prune after flowering or in late winter to maintain a fuller shape.
Mature Size: Approximately 2–4 feet tall and wide.
