Agarita

A tough evergreen Texas native shrub valued for its blue-gray, holly-like foliage and clusters of fragrant yellow flowers that bloom in late winter to early spring. The flowers provide an important early nectar source for pollinators, followed by bright red berries that attract birds and other wildlife. Its dense, sharply pointed foliage also provides excellent shelter and makes agarita useful as a natural barrier or wildlife-friendly hedge.

Care: Plant in full sun to part shade and dry, well-draining soil. Agarita is highly heat and drought tolerant once established and performs especially well in rocky or alkaline Central Texas soils. Water regularly during establishment, then only occasionally during prolonged dry periods. Avoid overwatering and poorly drained locations.

Mature Size: Approximately 3–6 feet tall and wide.
